First of all, I spent hours testing and rereading the documentation
trying to figure out why my "Formatted reference"s didn't behave like
my "<reference> on page <page>", until I waded through the latex code
outputted by LyX and noticed one uses \prettyref and one uses \vref.
Then I had to track down where the hell those commands came from, and
eventually read both the varioref and prettyref manuals.

Why that? Have you read the EmbeddedObjects manual? There the different types of referencing are described. You don't have to take care about the used commands in the background, LyX will load the needed packages in the background. When these are not installed, LateX will warn you about missing style files.

If you mean 3.4.1, it doesn't say anything about reference formats that isn't already said in 6.1 of the user's guide. And the float section of the Embedded Objects guide seems the wrong place to discuss cross-references, anyway. I think what's wanted here is an indication (a) that "formatted references" are \prettyref references, and (b) that to get this to do anything, you may have to "self-define" reference formats. At least a reference to the prettyref documentation would be worthwhile here.
