I've also used xfig with Lyx, but ipe has a nicer interface and you can type latex into the drawing. it can save in pdf or eps, and here is the magical thing. ipe is smart enough to hide its configuration settings inside the eps or pdf file and so ipe can open the eps / pdf file and revise it.
