Is the MiKTeX bin directory on your system path? Can you run "latex --version" at a DOS prompt (without supplying a path to MiKTeX) and get a response with a plausible version date?
If yes, take a look at the log generated by the installer (should be in your user directory, I think) and see if it found a LaTeX installation. You might want to publish the log to the list. Paul
