Tables in maths *is* legal LaTeX.
However, the point is valid. And once we have decide how to describe
it, we have to decide what we do when a text with insets is pasted in
a place where they should not be: delete them? refuse to paste? Or
when the layout of a paragraph is changed: what to do about invalid
parts?
