Hi Esther

The DRM protected files aren't something which really worry us to be truthful.
We don't use any of them here. All we were thinking about was a possibly
easier way of reading the ePub files from TC. I personally am not a huge fan
of reading books these days. To be honest I don't have the ability to
concentrate just now for one reason or another.

But I'm much happier actually doing something than reading books. All the
same, the Adobe DE project is an interesting one and I hope it brings the
VoiceOver user some positive experience.

Hi Lynne and Gordon,

You should treat Adobe Digital Editions Preview the way that you treat a music
player app -- there's no association with any specific site or "Store" for
purchasing book that use this format of protected file. However, if you
download an eBook, or have it on your computer, you can add it to your ADE
Preview app, and the files will show up in the user's Documents/Digital
Editions/ folder. Saying that you want to have books open automatically in the
ADE Preview is like ensuring that all music files open in iTunes -- not a good
thing. The user can choose to make this the default application for opening
that file type on his or her own computer, but making that the default means
that you would not, for example, have the flexibility of Stanza Desktop to
reformat documents. Also, there are machine requirements to run the ADE
Preview in terms of both minimum operating system (Snow Leopard) and resources,
as well as the DRM restrictions, while other readers like Stanza Desktop or
O'Reilly's Bookworm on-line ePub book reader are usable without those
requirements.

The thing we'll have to explore in more detail are the restrictions on which
account or how many computers (if more than one) the DRM-protected file can be
opened on. I wasn't surprised that Anne could not read the Kobo eBook ADE file
that was associated with her husband's account, and which might have been
previously downloaded and authorized for his computer. For library downloads
that support ADE DRM of eBooks (or OverDrive audiobooks), they tell you very
carefully that you cannot change the computer with which you start the
download. The book or audiobook cannot play on any other machine during your
loan period.

And the buttons to move to next and previous page are a pain for uninterrupted
reading, but at least you can press the right and left arrow keys for this
function.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
