Hi Mary, What works for me is going to download the Adobe Digital Editions from the web site. So, for example, if you go to the Kobo account page in Safari on your Mac, sign in, and navigate to your account settings, you can access your purchase history. You are also able to download copies of the books that you purchased for you Kobo app in Adobe Digital Edition ePub format. This is the version that you can download and read on your Mac in the Adobe Digital Editions Preview.
I also tried by downloading a ePub book that was done through a purchase (actually it was a free commercial ePub with a coupon inserted in the code box) that was supported by Adobe Digital Editions. Last time I tried opening this in the stable version of ADE that I still have on my Mac, nothing was accessible. The only thing VoiceOver read were the close, minimize, and zoom buttons on the title bar and the title bar heading "Adobe Digital Editions". This is still true. It's only in the new Adobe Digital Editions Preview that I can read this book. One annoyance is that there is no continuous reading. The best you can do is press the right arrow key to move to the next page. I haven't figured out a way to get a version of the book to readable format on my iOS device. Sending a mail attachment gives me prompts to open the ePub in a number of apps, like iBooks, Kobo, Stanza, etc. But the versions with ADE DRM won't read in these apps. The only apps that I know support ADE DRM are OverDrive and Bluefire Reader. Authorizing OverDrive didn't help to get the file in there -- that's really only for direct library downloads. I tried adding to Bluefire Reader, but although the book gets added, nothing about the controls is accessible. I can tell the title is there, and move through pages, but unless I want to screen capture each page individually and send it to OCR in Prizmo, I can't read the book with VoiceOver!
