Hi Mary,

I was able to download an eBook from my public library with Adobe Digital
Editions (ADE) DRM protection, and have VoiceOver read this in the OverDrive
app (on iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad). When I re-visit the library account
site, it seems possible to download the same ebook file onto my computer, as
well, and you should be able to do the download in either order if your
device(s) are authorized with your Adobe Digital Editions login and password.
You should only need to authorize your device once, in your settings for the
app, or in the Adobe Digital Editions Preview application on your computer. My
library sets a limit of 3 downloads per eBook title. I think that is to either
mobile devices or computer during the borrowing period.

The advantage of using the OverDrive app on an iOS device is that you'll have
the ability to navigate by characters, words, or lines using the rotor setting.
At present, in the ADE Preview on my Mac, I have to advance each page using
the right arrow key, and I can only pause/resume reading with VoiceOver by
pressing the Control key. You can read continuously within a page, search,
navigate with the table of contents, and bookmark pages, but you can't navigate
by character, words, or lines using the ADE Preview version 1.8 on your
computer, as you have already noticed. However, I haven't found any general
way to get an eBook with ADE DRM into the OverDrive app, except for the ones I
download directly from my library. I read a very recent review that stated you
could mail these ePubs as attachments, then open them in the OverDrive app on
your iPad. That didn't work for me, since OverDrive was not one of the apps
that was offered (although Bluefire Reader, which is not acce
ssible with VoiceOver for these files, was one of the options), but I haven't
run the latest iOS update. The reviewer claimed that mailed ePub attachments
could be opened in OverDrive.

I don't know whether you've used the OverDrive app to place downloadable
audiobooks from your public library directly onto your iOS device, but the
procedure for downloading eBooks with ADE DRM protection from your public
library is similar. You don't need to have or use any software applications on
your Mac computer to download to your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad running the
free OverDrive app. On the other hand, if you do want to

One quick warning with the OverDrive app is that when most of these ebooks
first load into the app, you'll be on a cover graphic, which VoiceOver won't
read, just as the case for the ADE Preview application on your Mac. The page
navigation controls stay up when you first launch a book, but seem set to
automatically fade out after a period that may be too short for you to
navigate/flick through all of them before this happens. If you want to bring
them back up, just double tap in the center of the screen. The button controls
at the top (of my iPad) then read out as: "Exit book", "Brightness Button",
"Font Size Button", "ePub Info Flip Icon", and "Bookmark Button". At the bottom
of the page is the slider for book position, and if you flick to read the
bottom left and right corner, you'll hear the number of pages left in chapter
and the total number of pages.

You want to double tap the "ePub Info Flip Icon" button to bring up the table
of contents to advance past the cover. Alternatively, you could toggle
VoiceOver off and tap the right side of the screen to advance the page. If
you are on the screen reached with "ePub Info Flip Icon" you'll find two
buttons at the bottom. By default the first button in the bottom left corner,
"Navigation", will be selected. The second button, which you can also reach by
going to the last element of the screen (four finger tap on bottom half of
screen) is the "Bookmarks" button. It's not in the bottom right corner, but is
instead, just to the right of the "Navigation" button in the bottom left
corner. Double tap the "Resume" button in the top right corner to get back to
your book. Double tapping the "ePub back arrow" button in the top left corner
takes you back to your library of downloaded eBooks.

Will send this off now, as it has been sitting on my computer for a while.
Note that OverDrive library download services for eBooks are available
internationally. I don't think they're in France, or the Scandinavian
countries, but the UK, Australia, Germany, Canada, Taiwan, and a number of
other countries have libraries using OverDrive.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
