Hello Geoff, When I want to read a long PDF file I interact wit the test area and then press command+a to select all the text and then use the services option of preview to move the selected text into a new textedit window. I then save the textedit document as an RTF file which is then easy to read continuously. I have even used the services option to save the entire textedit document as a sound track in iTunes so that I can download it onto my iPod and listen to it in the garden or whatever. That works nicely. All the best....
