Subject: "finder busy"

My computer was working fine this morning and then, for no reason I could understand finder kept being busy. Now from then on, finder is busy and I can't get it to do anything. Sometimes I can quickly open a folder or something between the short ready times and the almost constant busy times. I don't know how to tell what's hanging finder up. I've restarted a couple of times and I also turned the machine all the way off for one of the restarts.

Also, and I don't know if this is related, the way I turn my volume up and down on the keyboard is different. I use an Apple bluetooth keyboard and I always use the far left bottom key in conjunction with the f11 and 12 keys to turn volume up and down. Now that key seems to do nothing. The command key is now what I seem to have to use. I'm confused and frustrated and feel like there is so much about this machine I don't know.
