Thanks for all the tips, fine people. I had actually done a lot of this. Yesterday when I attempted to disconnect all of the peripherals, I discovered that at some point the monitor had become unplugged. I don't know how or when this happened,but I was pretty sure I had found the problem. Sure enough, once the monitor was plugged back in, and I had turned off the machine by holding in the power button, and then restarted, all was happy and bliss. The monitor is a must, or apparently "finder" will continually search for it and life as we know it will cease.
