Of course you're missing something.  What happens is that your message headers 
are downloaded, but not the body of the message. Therefore, you can see who 
each one is from; but you don't have to read it and download it until you hit 
the Enter key. There's one exception to this rule; if you have the preview pain 
turned on, the IMAP setting becomes ineffective.
