Hi Josh and Others, In general, you can find Mac apps that are both in the Mac App store and outside it by doing a Google search on the software name (e.g. "MacScan, or "Sophos") together with "Macupdate". The MacUpdate site is probably the closest thing we have to a general users review site of software for the Mac. It uses a standard format for its page layout, and includes a brief description of the app, information about whether this is paid or free, when the last version and release was, lists alternative versions for different operating systems if this applies, such as separate versions of freeware maintenance programs like OnyX being tailored to Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard, etc. or some software which still have versions that run on the old PowerPC platform as well as Intel Macs. There is always a download link to the both the product (which may be the same link as on the developer's web page), and another link to the developer's web page. You'll also be able to read user review comm ents and suggestions for other apps that do similar functions.
In many cases, although an app may be available both from the Mac App store and directly from the developer's web site, it can be useful to know that there is a developer's web site version by checking MacUpdate. For example, there are sometimes coupon discounts or upgrade discounts which apply only from the developer's site when you are purchasing an app. Also, some apps have free trial downloads at the developer's site. Developers are not allowed to place apps that stop working at some later time in the Mac App store, so you won't see 30-day free trial downloads of apps there -- even if the same (full-format) app is also listed in the Mac App store.
