To expand further on Zach's correct infrmation, full system requirements for
Snow Leopard, Lion & Mountain Lion can be found at the following places:
System Requirements for Lion & Snow Leopard can be found in Apple's KB article
HT4949
System Requirements for Mountain Lion can be found on Apple's Mountain Lion
Technical Specs page at http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Incidentally, Apple specifies a minimum of 2GB RAM for both Lion & Mountain
Lion.

Regarding refurbished Macs, the following information is from my own personal
experiences dealing with Apple Mac refurbs purchased in the U.S. directly from
Apple's U.S. web store. I cannot speak to Macs refurbished by vendors other
than Apple, and I do not know if Apple even offers these same refurbs outside
of the U.S.
I have had excellent experiences with the Macs I've purchased through Apple's
own refurb store, which can be accessed here in the U.S. by going to
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals
Refurbished Macs purchased from Apple through their own web store come with the
same 1 year warranty as their new Macs, and you can also purchase the same
Applecare extended warranty at the same price if so desired.
The inventory on the website listed above changes daily.
Apple usually seems to begin offering refurbs of new models just 3 or 4 months
after they've been introduced.
Also, if you happen to be a student in the U.S. and you really want to buy a
brand new Mac, Apple offers some discounts and incentives to purchase new
products through their education store. When I purchased a new Macbook Air some
time ago, I received a 100 dollar discount and a 100 dollar App Store credit
which I used to purchase ABBYY FineReader, an application that has turned out
to be one of my most-used college tools.
