Hello David, I’m sure that an iPad is not a good replacement for a netbook, but a MacBook Air would definitely work for you. You can quickly switch between open documents in Pages using Cmd-Accent sign which on a British keyboard is to the left of z.
The smallest MacBook Air is the 11-inch model and it is very light to carry around. If you do get a MacBook Air, make sure to get 8 gb of RAM.
