Harmony, try this.
Instead of holding down the option key, hold the letter U down.
another thing is, unplug your drive, boot it up, and instantly as soon as
you hear the chime, push the drive into the port. I've found that some
times, the drives don't get power right upon the immediate boot up. I dono
why, but I have seen it a time or two.
The other thing is, once you're booted into OSX, try going to system prefs,
startup disk. then check the radio button for the bootable USB drive. then
reboot, and see if it comes up.

Thanks Isaac. when I restarted the computer as it said in the
instructions about making the bootable thing, it did nothing except go to
the login screen as normal, even though I was holding down the options
key.
