USPS stands for United States Postal Service, which is like Canada Post.
When somebody in the US ships to Canada via USPS, it's handled in Canada
by Canada Post, who will levy a CAD$5 fee for collecting duty and taxes.

UPS is United Parcel Service. Apparently their rates are somewhat better
for US shippers than FedEx's rates. However, when UPS parcels arrive in
Canada, they will be processed by UPS's brokerage service, which will
cost the Canadian buyer about CAD$38, according to a UPS rep I spoke to
a few days ago. It is apparently possible to avoid paying UPS's
brokerage fee by making arrangements before the parcel is shipped, that
it be handled by your own broker, or that you do the brokerage yourself.

FedEx told me that they don't charge a brokerage fee. However, they do
levy a handling fee of about CAD$7 for collecting duty or taxes for
parcels entering Canada.

The FedEx rep didn't say anything about any difference between FedEx
ground and FedEx air, in terms of brokerage fees or any other fees. If
anyone has other information, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

I am trying to buy a Firewire hard drive case from Granite Digital.
Their sales guy told me they could ship either UPS or FedEx. They don't
use USPS because in their experience USPS loses too many parcels.

Unfortunately, most discount computer parts operations won't use USPS.
Many use UPS exclusively. It also seems that many of those who use
either UPS or FedEx, won't allow the buyer to pick one or the other.
