Regarding shipping items from the USA -
I have personally shipped lots of items from the USA to Canadian addresses.
The reason you get screwed over by the brokerage is because you don't have
an account with either a brokerage firm OR a courier (most couriers act as
their own brokerage firms, and thus actually are capable of saving you big
$).
I have found that the only way I can circumvent paying 50+ $ on a 100$ item
for brokerage and taxes is to have it shipped to my place of work on their
account. I then ask the office to set aside the itemized invoice for the
shipment, and re-imburse them. This way I 'piggyback' their account, the
courier ships with their perferred rate and the brokerage is usually only a
few dollars.
Of course, this method assumes you have an understanding employer. But
perhaps Mailbox Etc is willing to assist you???
