amber,

similar experience. laughable incompetence, impressive speed.

aside from being told (falsely) that my 7100 wasn't 'good enough'
to connect (the internet doesn't care what OS or hardware you
are running, just which TCP/IP/PPP/UDP you have available - and
that _sometimes_ depends on your OS)...imagine the techie's
surprise to find out that all i had to do was plug the CAT-5 into
the AAUI transciever in the back of my machine and open ONE
control panel (TCP/IP). no ripping apart the guts, no tweaky
driver installation and configuration, just plug in, switch, and
play. the ethernet card he came with is gathering dust in some
drawer. maybe i should have charged him for the lesson.

things worked well with the 7100.
now that i have a g3'd 7600, this internet thing is a blast.

anyway, the only running issues i've had with shaw are:

1) every once in a while i have to dig into the TCP/IP control
panel, switch away from DHCP, save changes, and then switch back
to DHCP and save changes before i can get connected. this, i'm
told, is because they use non-standard DHCP servers. folk using
anything not windows have reported similar issues. but they've
gotten better over the years.

2) the OCCASIONAL dropped mail service - they're getting better
about that, too, as time goes by. only once this year, iirc.

the only 'problem' lately has been finding worthwhile content.
seems like 3/4 my time is spent winnowing data for the one piece
i'm looking for. btw, these lists (and LEM) greatly aid in that
process.
