I think Apple will be a viable unit:perhaps independent, perhaps part
of Sony or AOL/Time Warner or whatever.
As a teacher who has used and endorsed Apple for over 10 years, I
don't hold much hope for Apple in the education system unless it can
market itself properly. My school district, which has been almost
solidly Apple since 1987 is being flooded with Dells coming off a 3
yr. lease at the local pulp mill. We can get a 3 yr. old Dell w/17"
monitor and Pentium III chip for $200 Cdn. No company on earth can
match that in new stock and of course 3 yr. old Macs aren't for sale
at any price.
While the IT boys rub their hands with glee, I vainly try to
point out total cost of operation. As long as they're this cheap and
still the "industry standard", PC's will dominate education. Years
from now, people will shake their heads and wonder how we could have
been so stupid, given the difference in quality, but it will be too
late.
Why am I so optimistic about Apple's future? 1) Apple's
profit margin. Why they're not spending $25 million a year on TV ads
is beyond me. Lay off the soft and fuzzy and get loud, proud and
in-your-face. They will sell all they can build.
2) Apple's innovation. They are the BMW's of computers - end of
statement. They work and work and just work and look cool doing it.
Nobody does it better. Hey, that could be a theme song!
3) Apple owners are not possessers:they are possessed. Evangelism -
does it apply to any other electical device that you own? Can
advertising buy this much devotion?
4) The listservs, such as the one you're reading right now,are
example of the fine support system Apple has. Have you heard of
"Dellista's" -didn't think so. "Compaqers?" It is to laugh. Did you
see ads for the Dell Teacher Institutes this summer? How 'bout the
Compaq workshops for teachers? Nuff said.
If real estate has location, location, location, computing has
support, support, support and this is what the Apple community is all
about.
