I think it has to do with the settings as I can't make either Netscape or
Eudora work. I got through to the Sympatico help again on the first
ring. After a lot of fiddling around he said it had something to so
with my modem and to try again tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Hi Bob. Let's take these one at a time:
1)_ I've downloaded AppleWorks 6.2.4.smi. But when I try to install
It it get a message that I need Stuffit Engine 6.1 or later. I recall
being in this fix using OS 9.2.2 but darned of I can remember how I
fixed it. Any ideas? I have Stuffit Light 6.5.1.
AppleWorks 6.2.4.smi is a self-extracting disk image and should not require
Stuffit when used in the OS X environment (it does use Stuffit if you
download it in System 9, but that, I hope, is another story). If the
Appleworks file does not open properly in OS X, try dragging and dropping it
on the Disk Copy application, which should be in your Utilities folder. If
the computer is still asking for Stuffit, you might as well install it --
you're going to need it on the OS X side eventually, anyway. Version 7 of
the freeware version is now available for 9 and X. You should probably
install it on both sides.
2) I've opened Sympatico's Mac OS X web site. I open the System
Preferences and click Network. Then it says to click the Show menu,
then click Active Network Ports. I dont have a Show menu. Looking for
"show" with Sherlock was unproductive. What to do?
You've never said what version of OS X you're running, but as far as I know
they all have this menu. I'm sending you, under separate cover so as not to
burden the list, a picture of the Network System Preferences with the Show
menu circled in red.
3) I got the printer organized. Trouble is I can't use it until I can
open AppleWorks!

4) I changed from Canada to US and as you can see no longer have
trouble with accented letters when I Hit ?
Well done.
5) Finally, When I get connected to the Internet and open Netscape
and then try to open a bookmark, nothing happens. A bunch of circular
arrows whirls around in the top left hand corner but nothing opens.
Generally when this happens with OS 9.2.2 restarting with or without
rebuilding the desk top or zapping the pram cures the problem but not
with OS X.
Hmm, not sure about this one. I guess the first thing to figure out is
whether this is a problem with your bookmarks or your overall connection
settings. Is it just the bookmarked sites that fail to connect, or is it all
sites? Does your homepage show up? What about sites whose addresses are
typed into the address bar? Have you verified that you're connected to the
internet while this is going on (that is, by leaving the Internet Connect
window open so you can see the "connected" status)? Let me know; we may have
to fix up some settings.

Hi Bob.
1. Did you use Netscape to download the file? If so, it will be in whatever
folder you assigned Netscape to put downloaded files (this will be found in
Netscape's prefs). Or you can seach your hard drive for the file. If you
downloaded the same updater I did, it's called "AppleWorks 6.2.4.smi," and
you seach for it the same way you did in System 9; that is, [Apple-key]-F
from the Finder.
If you got the upgrade through Software Update, you won't have a file to
open because the software has already done all the work. Just open up
AppleWorks and it will run in OS X.
2. In OS X, printers are added and controlled through the Print Center,
which should be found in your Utilities folder.
3. Your keyboard is mapped to something other than what it should be. You
probably erroneously set it to the Canadian - CSA map, which contains the
characters you mentioned and is primarily used by francophones. Go to your
International System Preferences and make sure "U.S." is the only selection
>> checked under the Input Menu tab.
4. Use the "Network Port Configuration" or "Active Network Ports" option in
your Network control panel to disable the Internal Modem option in Internet
Connect. The first link MaDuff sent to you
(http://www1.sympatico.ca/help/Software/osx.html) explains how
this is done.

Sorry to bother you again.
I have down loaded an Mac OS X upgrade for Apple works 6 and can not
