There was recently a thread on another list I belong to about this. Somebody wanted to know "what was wrong" with the eMac and why Apple bothered with it.
I answered:
There is nothing wrong with the eMac. I have an eMac 700 with CDRW and although I wouldn't want to move it around very often, I don't move my desktop computer around very often.
Apple brought out the eMac because it is cheaper, simple as that. I chose an eMac over the then 15" LCD iMac because 1) it cost less, and 2) I liked the 17" screen and the wider range of screen resolutions.
The person's nephew was considering an eMac because it was inexpensive, but he wanted to do audio and video with it.
The real question for your nephew is, precisely what features does, for example, the Superdrive equipped eMac NOT have that he might need for his purposes. Same question applies to the iMac.
The real distinction is between the consumer (emac, iMac, iBook) and professional (G5, Powerbook) ranges. For example, I understand that the PowerBooks let you run multiple screens showing more area, while the iBook (like the eMac) only lets you mirror the screen to a second monitor (i.e., the same image on both screens.
He would also want to consider audio input and output carefully.
The eMac is very heavy because of the 17" CRT, and because it is so heavy they didn't put in a handle (like the original iMac design). You really have to move it around like a monitor: with two hands and against your chest.
Like the iMac, it is not internally expandable (like a PowerMac) but it has firewire and USB so for most of us that is enough.
It all comes down to what you need to do with it.
The advantages are: it's pretty fast (1 mHz G$), the screen is nice, it's cheap compared to your other choices.
However, if you buy the $1099 Can. model you only get 128 MB of RAM, so you have to get at least another 128 MB (preferably more). If you get the $1499 Can. model you get 256 MB, a larger hard drive and a SuperDrive.
Best of luck, Simon
PS: Of course, I wish I had bought mine eMac 7 months later: it would have been faster, with a combo drive, for less money :-)
