"comand"+"option"+"p"+"r" keys. You must hold these keys down until you have
heard no less than five "bongs" (also for complete "zapping" of PRAM data.
After the fifth bong, let the mac continue to boot.
It has always worked for me.

Thanks David. Problem is I can't see the drive, rather the computer
can't. But I will try the battery thing, didn't know about the power
cord, but I did turn off the power bar although not for an hour. And I
don't get any bongs at all, well now I do with 8.5 on the ide so maybe I
can rebuild the pram with the keystrokes now.
I'll try some of the scsi suggestions that Eric suggested too, as I
think my problem lies in scsi land. Cheers and thanks for the suggestions.
