I think the option key is worth a try, for sure - while it's true that you won't get the selector, it may just boot into OS 9. I run a beige g3 that normally boots into 10.4.1 (see the XPostfacto links), but when I hold down the option key it boots into 9. It's always worked that way for me. Mind you I run separate partitions for the two OS's, so that may help with this kind of thing.

The only time I've had serious boot problems was after messing around with the partition scheme without reformatting - when I rebooted I got kicked into Open Firmware. Running Diskwarrior solved the problem when everything else (disk utility, Techtool Pro) said the disk was fine. I highly recommend you scan your drive with Diskwarrior if you can get your hands on a copy.

Brian's best bet IMO is to accept that his PRAM (or mobo) is slightly
screwy and use XPostFacto to force the computer to do what he wants.
