Hi,
The finder info for these files is wrong and needs to be corrected.
It maybe that you will have to trash Maclink/Dataviz and all of it's
extensions and preferences to cure this problem - or at least disable
them. If you have OS8.6+ hold down the spacebar at startup until the
extensions manager appears and uncheck all Maclink/Dataviz control panels
and extensions - if you have an earlier system just open the extensions
manager control panel - uncheck them and restart.
Then double click the claris files and see what happens - if claris
does not launch and you get a missing creator dialogue to assign an
application to open the files - choose claris and check that the files
are ok. If they are then I would copy the contents to a new file and
resave before trashing the old file. Quit claris and double click the new
file - claris should launch to open it -if it does restart with command
and option to rebuild the desktop - if it doesn't the problem may be with
claris and you will need to trash all claris files and reinstall them
(might be a good move anyway - or upgrade to AppleWorks or Excel).
If Maclink still launches you will have to move it and all of it's
stuff to the trash and try again - just do a search for them and move
them into the trash one by one from the search window.
I leave it with you whether to reactivate Maclink (I would trash it)
- it sounds as though it's translating files that do not need it by
taking preference over claris - it should present a dialogue something
like 'do you require help translating this file' and if you have the
creator the answer should be no.
I stopped using it a couple of years ago when the translations were
less than savoury - the tiniest bit of data loss in a spreadsheet can be
tragic.
My apologies to all on the list if this O/T.
Pete
