I think it is unfair to equate simplicity of design with a lack of care. Jonathan Ive is clearly trying to establish a conformity across the range, beginning with the very smart PowerBooks which have established a lean and business like look as the basis on which to build the G5, and the new Apple image. If you are paring down the design to include only what is strictly necessary, that produces a conceptual elegance in itself. If he is also able to make something stylish which betrays its quality in its build while not being profligate with expensive materials in the production or making fiddly nonsense which expands the manufacture time, then he is doing us the service. Possibly making something we can hope to afford to buy but which looks like only a wealthy few should be able to, like some of the more esoteric power amplifier designs which I would love to be able to afford. Of course, if - for example - you cannot touch it without leaving grubby hand prints all over it or if the case acts like a filter for every bit of airborne detritus requiring a really difficult cleaning job every week if you still want people to be impressed with it, then I suppose it all starts to fall down. I am looking forward to seeing one in the flesh and reserve judgment. However, I am erring on the positive side.
