I think it is unfair to equate simplicity of design with a lack of care.
I can certainly see that a lot of work went into the design - and it's looking better as better pics are becoming available, too. Nevertheless, I think I shall be even sadder to farewell my old AGP G4 than the 7300 that finally went out to pasture last year (despite it's g3 upgrade, it was eventually made redundant by my wife's iBook ;).
The G4 enclosure (well, ok, the shape was introduced with the first non-beige G3s, but I like the greys better;) has certainly been a talking point whenever I had pc-using visitors, and I really can't see the new enclosure turning heads in quite the same way. And while I can understand the problems some people had with all the cables moving when you open the side door, I personally don't have a problem with it, and suspect I'll miss the both the convenience and the 'cool factor' of just being able to drop down the side and fiddle with the innards.
Still, good to see they're finally including some decent sleds for new drives - the sysadmin at work certainly had an easier time mounting a new drive in my Dell 8200 than I did attempting the same feat at home last year. The uncabled fans etc look nice too, and if the new beasties are as quiet as claimed, then myself and my other half with both be very happy!
Christopher Phillips.
