Prices on G4 at ebay dont seem yet to be too much affected by the new dual

Really? What sort of price are you looking for? There's a g4/400 there at the
moment (albeit with a day yet to run) where the current bid is only gbp200..

That's basically my current beast, which runs OS X very well (though I have 1.3GB of
ram, which probably helps a _lot_)

I dont really want a(nother) noisy Mac!

hmm - my tolerance for noise has probably dropped as my environment at work
has gotten noisier, but I must admit that noise is one of the reasons I'll be ditching
my G4 as soon as I can get hold of a new beast. If you really want quiet, I think
you're basically stuck with either a Cube, an iMac, one of the portables, or a g5..

I hunted around to try to find out more in real world use as to what G4 are
better/worse and why.

Considerably faster per clock at video compression, ripping CDs and throwing
photos around. Most things that throw a lot of data around benefit well from altivec,
although the iTools and Photoshop seem to take better advantage than a number
of other apps that don't do as well as I'd expect.

The only thing I feel is that a dual processor would
be better if possible for multitasking in X as well as Photoshop in either.

I gather DP machines tend to be a hell of a lot more responsive than single
cpu machines if you're actually trying to _use_ the machine at the same time
as it's churning through some task or other. They can often feel 'snappier' than
comparable single CPU machines as a result.

And the better spec I can get the more futureproof it it - might be.

True :)

Any helpful information is welcome. I cant be the only one moving to New
world Macs on a budget.

Again - knowing what your budget actually is would help!

Oh, you were asking for recommended vendors for CPU upgrades - I
can't for the life of me recall who I bought a g3 card for the 7300 I sold on this list
from, but fwiw in more general terms I've had good experiences with both OWC in
the US and gordon harwood over here (ghc.co.uk)

Cheers,
Christopher.
