Got a G4 running OSX 10.1.5 and when I try and empty the trash can it says its in use. I'm still getting used to OSX and on the old system I used to rebuild desktop regularly and use disk first aid so what's the equivalent to this now? I opened Disk Utility but option to run First Aid is greyed out, and I haven't had chance to upgrade Norton yet.
You don't need to rebuild the Desktop in 10. Lots of people have had problems with Norton and OS X (although I used to use it to optimize the HD in 10.1 but haven't needed to with later versions).
OnyX has an option to Force Trash as well as lots of other useful functions:
