Martin, Thank you for your detailed reply. It was a considerable encouragement at a point where I felt I had run out of road. Your e-mail was the difference that made the difference. In response I deleted all the twain and Epson stuff I'd accumulated over the weeks in trying to solve the problem. One of the many things that threw me in the past was that I couldn't find any drivers for GT-5000 and have spent literally hours searching for these. Returned to the Epson.co.uk site and lo and behold no divers were listed for GT-5000. (However I had a list of drivers from another Epson site (Malaysia?) that indicated that the drivers for GT-5000 and GT-5500 and others in the GT family were the same. However when you downloaded from this site something called TWAIN PRO downloaded and on installation this crashed my system). So armed with this information and your detailed listing of version numbers I downloaded the drivers for GT-5500 scanner and they matched the ones you specified, rebuilt the desktop and the could then capture images direct into Photoshop once more. I've now have broadband up and working using a cable modem driven from an ethernet card bought off e-bay for 15, can print to my Laserwriter using the serial port through the use of localtalkbridge, run virtual memory which my G3 accelerator card needs, and now Photoshop and scanner is working as it it did previously before upgrading to OS 8.6. A heartfelt thank you for your help and that of others on the list.
