The 7300 has a deam case design. I can't say enough nice things about it. A
total deam to get into. However, the way the DIMMS fit into the slots is
annoying. I could litterally see the logic board bending as I applid
preassure to them. I much prefer the simple clip method that PC's employ. A
couple of times I have rebooted only to realise that the ram wasn't seated
properly. That takes me back to 72 pin simms in 386's.
If you look at DIMM slots (PCxxx and DDR) on a modern PC board they used the same snap-down RAM slots. I agree they are a total fag to put the RAM in and I too have struggled with 7500 and 7300 RAM installations in the past. However I have also had much worse problems with early PC66 and PC100 PC boards. I had one early AT/ATX PC board that I literally had to put most of my weight on to get the RAM to seat, so much that I drew blood from my palm doing it once - OUCH...
However, let's not even talk about upgrading ram on a 9500. The 8x00 seems
to have a similar case design, having disassembled a 8200.
The 8100, 8200 and 8500 all use the same design, the 9500 is just a taller version. The design dates back to the Quadra 800 back in 1991 and so is a bit antiquated. That said, try working in a 7100 some time and you will never complain again...
If you want the pinnacle of pre-G3 case design you need to find a 9600. The case is less a design, more a work of functional art...
However, inserting PCI cards is easier, no screws. Hard drives are easier to
install; sleds rule - except when they stick in the grooves.
Taking the whole thing apart is way easier. I once stripped a 7500 down to it's frames, cleaned it's component parts, and reassembled it in under an hour, and i cleaned it WELL.
If only I could find a kensington 2 button adb mouse, then I'd be happy ;-)
Getst ye a USB card and a Microsoft Mouse...
