When you say b&w I think you meant to say Beige G3. I agree with pretty much
all the comments here the Desktops were great from the 7200 up. The 7100
was a pain because you had to take out the drive tray to upgrade memory,
which involved undoing screws and unplugging cables if you wanted to get
decent access.

And the all metal case design cuts you hands to ribbons. I have a Performa 600 (somewhere between a Quadra 600 and a IIvi/vx) and it uses the same evil case. So much did the 7100 case annoy me I have a complete, and very competant, 7100 build into a Mac IIcx case (all plastic and lovely).

The Towers up until the 9600 and 8600 were similarly a bit of
a pain

It's just the sheer hassle of taking the board out completely for RAM upgrades. I have an 840av and it's as bad, thankfully I don't swap the RAM about a lot ;)

the 8600 and 9600 were great in terms of industrial design, but for
some reason I always found that the performance wasnt as good for the 9600
as for the 9500 with a similar processor.

I find that odd. I think the 9600/250 and faster, that used Mach5 CPU boards were really the performance machines. The 350MHz 9600 is reputed to be nearly as fast for many things as a 233MHz G3 Beige. I can't substantiate that myself but I can believe it.

I think one of the best features of the PCI PowerMacs (post x200) was the CPU card slot. 900Mhz G4 anyone??

Of course the B&W G3 onwards were a real revolution in industrial design,
taking the initial direction of the 86/9600 and running with it.

As I said, my favourite Mac design of all time. Power, functionality, elegance and simplicity. Can't ask form much more...
