OK, so it's all true...OSX on Intel. A few questions:

1) Are Apple completely dropping PowerPC in the medium-to-long term, or
planning to use both and let the CPU manufacturers battle it out while
playing pick-and-choose?

PowerPC will no longer be available in Macs by the end of 2007 according to Steve's Keynote.

2) Am I the only one a bit concerned about Apple trying to force everyone to use Xcode and giving Metroworks/CodeWarrior a hard time? As a Windows developer I know what it's like to be forced into using Visual Studio as
the competing IDEs (in our case Watcom) got frozen out. It set the
company I worked for back about 6 months. Being a SuperCard user I
appreciate the hard work the developers must have had keeping up with
Apple as it changed things with every version of OSX - now they're going to have to build universal binaries and spend more resources testing those.

A valid point, although XCode does contain an import system for bringing Metrowerks coded stuff on-board. Also XCode is nowhere near as hellishly bad as Visual Studio to work with ;o).

3) Any chance people will stop buying PowerPCs for the next 12-18 months
and I can pick one up reallly, really cheap? ;-)

I considered that but then decided I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I did that because the purpose of me buying a new MAc every 3 years is to keep abreast of Apple's latest hardware developments. I currently see myself being an Intel early adopter - after all I was an OS X early adopter and also an XP early adopter on PC so I like to get in there while it's all fresh and developing and get used to it so by the time the masses convert I'm already clued up to provide help :o)

It all smacks of less and less choice/competition. Let's hope it doesn't mean less innovation. My head says it's good thinking by Jobs and Co. My heart says not....but I've always been a bit too nostalgic/ emotional when
it comes to computers....hey, I'm a geek.

Indeed. People naturally fear change, it's a normal human reaction. I'm not saying everyone's gonna go live in a cave because Apple changed to Intel, but a lot of folks I've spoken to are getting all mad and belligerent about this. I don't see the point really, after the initial gasp and 'holy ****' moment I sat back and decided to think on the whole thing and concluded that Apple were doing the best they could with a difficult situation. As Steve said at the end of the WWDC Keynote, "The heart of the Mac has always been the OS, and that's not standing still." Or, in the words of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy "DON'T PANIC!"

So, we're back to FAT binaries, and 'some' PowerPC legacy support. Ahhh this all brings back heady memories... Welcome to 1994 version 2.0 :o)...
