I never installed XCode, so I didn't realize there was an import

that all fits in and whether that will help Apple (replace gcc, etc.) or
be competition?

Apple will probably distribute them as well as Intel. That said XCode 2.1 already has a cross-compiler in it for Intel for forming universal binaries. Hard to say really. I guess Apple must have OK'd it, and it can't hurt for people porting Darwin based stuff (as opposed to Aqua/Desktop based).

I'm a late adopter, so I'll be the one asking for help :-).

I guess I just like to be prepared!

I can't see me lasting another 18 months+ with my aging G3s, so I might
be looking for some good deals on the current models when they get
replaced by what might be the last speedbumped PowerPC versions over the
next few months.

Well I have a G4/800 iMac and a G4/500 Blue & White Tower (about to be drafted as my new server) so I'll probably cope. My iMac is not yet 2 years old (about 1 and a lot of months) so it's got a few miles left in it yet.

I don't see the point really, after
the initial gasp and 'holy ****' moment I sat back and decided to
think on the whole thing and concluded that Apple were doing the best
they could with a difficult situation.

Couldn't agree more. Some people are really pleased, some are horrified.
I'm in the middle.

So am I. I see major bonuses and also major draw-backs.

So, we're back to FAT binaries, and 'some' PowerPC legacy support.
Ahhh this all brings back heady memories... Welcome to 1994 version
2.0 :o)...

I was at university in 1993 and I picked up a copy of Byte magazine that
was concentrating on the new PowerPC computers (6100/7100/8100, plus
future models from IBM that never turned up). I can remember being
amazed, and not a little confused, that the PowerMac could run both old
and new software.

My school got a truck load of 575s that year. I hated them with a passion. They ran System 7 - enough said I think. How many times do you think people got suckered by it not recognising their disk after they ejected it and didn't drop it in the trash, someone borrowed it and changed it etc... I vowed a hatred of Apple at the time that didn't really lift until 1999.

That issue was still in the back of my mind when I
finally bought a G3 six years later. Shame their prediction in the same issue about running Windows software at a decent speed turned out to be
not quite so accurate!

Apart from the PC compatibility cards. They worked OK speed wise. I never got the one to work right on my 7300 but hey - the software is well out of date.
