I never installed XCode, so I didn't realize there was an import
mechanism - Apple really are doing everything possible to entice
developers over to their development environment. Intel has announced
that they'll be releasing compilers for the IntelMacs - I wonder where
that all fits in and whether that will help Apple (replace gcc, etc.) or
be competition?

I'm a late adopter, so I'll be the one asking for help :-).

I can't see me lasting another 18 months+ with my aging G3s, so I might
be looking for some good deals on the current models when they get
replaced by what might be the last speedbumped PowerPC versions over the
next few months.

Couldn't agree more. Some people are really pleased, some are horrified.
I'm in the middle.

I was at university in 1993 and I picked up a copy of Byte magazine that
was concentrating on the new PowerPC computers (6100/7100/8100, plus
future models from IBM that never turned up). I can remember being
amazed, and not a little confused, that the PowerMac could run both old
and new software. That issue was still in the back of my mind when I
finally bought a G3 six years later. Shame their prediction in the same
issue about running Windows software at a decent speed turned out to be
not quite so accurate!
