My knowledge of spreadsheets is very limited but I thought that one
significant feature that would be missing by doing this instead of using a
database (relational not flat) is the lack of ability to filter multiple
parameters (sort by name, postcode, product, year in a single sweep)...

Can that be done (without the pain of single sorts and narrowing thereafter?

Another reason that I personally thought one wouldn't want to go spreadsheet
route is that in the future (and lets face it if there is no growth then...)
a database would / could expand with one if it is set up properly...I
shudder to think about trying to export/import anything that a business
solely relies upon...

There must be a programmer on this list that has done something like this in
MySQL (even without a GUI) that wouldn't cost the world?

Having said that I don't make my money programming and have no *real*
conception of what amount of energy goes into such a commercial project from
start to end...
