DayLite will import all your mail+address book data with ease. It has a
build in mail merge thing and can do HUGE mail outs.
The demo will work for 30 days, after that you just enter a license code
and your done.

I'm stuck with mail+address book (predominantly because of lack of time to
research alternatives) and with a few thousand contacts to manage, I'm
pretty in the dirt. Although they are in principle versatile and well
integrated, you simply can't send a newsletter of a few lines of text out to
3000+ contacts. That brings my 1GHz PB to its knees and it's never obvious
how many of the actual contacts the mail was sent to.
I'm therefore follwing this thread with interest. Also if someone has
address book experience opposite to mine, I'd like to hear from them. Maybe
I'm overlooking some obvious features there. I haven't even found obvious
ways to search for duplicates, etc.

Heather,
i take it the os x address book is not suitable?
It allows you to create multiple groups, create mailnng lists etc....
Pretty versatile.

Thanks to those who helped with suggestions for e-newsletters. Very
useful.
My next question: does anyone have any recommendations for contact
management software for the Mac, suitable for small business, and
without loads of useless (to me) bells and whistles (I don't need
it to do accounts, I don't need it to communicate with a fleet of
sales people, I don't need it to tell me where my nearest
restaurant is....etc etc). I'd like to be able to try it out free
first.
There doesn't seem to be a great deal of choice.
