Is it an Apple battery or 3rd party ?
Third party, bought on eBay.
Hum, a good make ?
I had terrible problems with a load of 3rd part ones I bought, can't
remember the name, Power Smart or something.
The battery has no name on it, but I purchased from World2Power...
Any lights on the battery ?
It's showing 3 lights, but if I push on it, the machine crashes (same
with old battery)
Well, then I'd take the machine apart and make sure all the boards
where the
battery plugs in are properly mounted - they can come apart and the
power
and charge boards become disconnected.
Take it apart? Omigodd! Well, I've only ever got as far as removing
the keyboard so far. I think I have a guide to its internals
somewhere, though.
I have no other PB to try it in and the old battery charged all
right.
Does it still ?
The battery now seems incommunicado, with the black cross on its icon.
Have you checked that the EMI shielding near the DC in socket isn't
shorting to it ?
Pardon?
There is a known problem (amongst the many on Wallstreets) where
the bronze
EMI shielding short to the outer casing of the DC in plug. When
you take
the machine to bits, just check it out.
Roger wilco.
Did you do any resets on the machine with the battery in BEFORE
you had
problems ?
No.
Good, because I think that some Apple resets MAY damage 3rd party
batteries,
just an observation on a number of occurrences I've seen.
Sometimes the battery icon in the menu bar shows a battery with a
black cross on it, at other times it shows a mains plug and 100% in
brackets.
And if you pull the mains at that point the machine shuts off ?
Yes, it just stops. :(
Is the PRAM battery good ?
Probably not, as the date resets without the main battery in, or when
it has malfunctioned.
Malfunctioned ? Any reset will likely clear the date.
Personal I'd suspect a bad battery and return it, or get it tested
elsewhere, but there are SO many bits of the Wally that can cause
batteries
not to charge ...
I can remember seeing the red X on the first new battery's icon and
going through various gymnastics to get it working, which it did for
18 months.
I don't like the machine crashing when you push the battery in
though and
would check that over.
I'll have to collar my husband with his testing tools etc. He's
working away from home during the week, so weekends are rather
precious; spending them sweating over my Wallstreet will not press
his button... :D
HTH
I am most grateful for your comments. :)
Regards
Susan
