I use the Telewest 4mbit service (which started off at 512k 5 years ago!) for £25 a month. My experience of UK ADSL connections is that they're slightly slower at the same 'rated speed' due to PPPoE overhead, more of a pain in the neck to set up (again due to PPPoE/ PPPoA) and less reliable (my cable connection has spent a couple of hours offline in total over the last 5 years). Some of the DSL ISPs are cheaper than Telewest for faster/same speed connections, but watch out for bandwidth caps. They're a lot easier to hit than you might think, and you could end up either paying a lot for the privilege or being offline until the start of the next billing cycle. The 384kbit upload on Telewest is a nice bonus too. A lot of the DSL connections I've seen at 2-8mbit down only have a 256kbit upstream, but that does vary a lot from ISP to ISP. Telewest also seem committed to keeping the connections good value for money - a couple of years ago the connection was bumped to 768/128kbit, then 1mbit/ 128kbit a year later, and now 4mbit/384kbit all at no extra cost, and I guess they will continues to do the same in the future to remain cost competitive with new deals on other ISPs. To get the equivalent with most DSL ISPs, you'd have to cancel the contract at the end of the year and then take up the service again (since they only give faster connections to 'new' customers).

Hi everyone

Can anyone recommend a small business/work from home broadband package?

What are your experiences?

I am in a major connurbation, my BT exchange has ADSL and I am in a Telewest
area for cable.

I must emphasise that I am looking for business use rather than consumer but
a fairly basic package not more than 2 Meg.

TIA

Nick
