The Nano is connected through a Belkin 4 port USB 1.1 (I think) hub. The Snow iMac is on 10.3.9.

Ah, your combination (Panther + USB 1.1 hub) is the opposite way around, so it doesn't confirm or deny my theory. I still think an OS upgrade would probably do the trick with my father's machine, but I'm not going to do it just for the sake of a faster hub and less USB cable swapping.

I've not tried it with any of the built-in or keyboard sockets. I have yet also to sync it via the JBL On Stage speaker set which may help with a low USB power problem.

Are there any updates required for a Shuffle working with Tiger or, as you suggest, is Tiger itself which is the problem?

No, there's no problem with Tiger, just Jaguar and early versions of Panther. I've got a Mac mini running Tiger (10.4.4) and my Shuffle works fine with it (the USB chain is all 2.0).
