Hi listers
I have a G4 quicksilver with a CD writer as standard - thus unlike
many
earlier G4s it doesn't read DVDs.
I would like a DVD writer for archiving, etc., and have seen some
external
ones that will write up top 8.4GB. There is an empty bay on the
quicksilver
- can I get a writer for this?
Also, a lot of the writeable DVD discs that I see about are 4.2GB
is the 8.4
special media or just a crafty way of writing to a 4.2? Will any
DVD reader
read an 8.4 DVD or does it have to read by an appropriate drive. If
I need
to give out discs out I need to know that they can be read by 'your
average
DVD reader'.
The second bay on a Quicksilver will only take a 3.5" device, unless
you do some significant surgery. There is a 'how-to' out there on the
www, but unless you have to do that, I'd just swap out your CD drive.
I swapped a CD writer/DVD reader in my Quicksilver for a PIONEER DVD-
RW DVR-108 which 10.4 supports natively.
It's only a 'standard' (4GB+) DVD writer; as I understand it, the
dual-layer 8Gb types are quite 'leading edge', a lot more expensive,
and you'll need to check on compatibility issues.
