I have a G4 quicksilver with a CD writer as standard - thus unlike many
earlier G4s it doesn't read DVDs.

I would like a DVD writer for archiving, etc., and have seen some external ones that will write up top 8.4GB. There is an empty bay on the quicksilver
- can I get a writer for this?

yes, no problem, but it would be silly to piggy-back it under your existing drive - just swap it out, 5 minutes tops.

as I understand it, the
dual-layer 8Gb types are quite 'leading edge', a lot more expensive,
and you'll need to check on compatibility issues.

Things have changed. Newer, faster DL drives are no longer so leading edge and they're all cheap as dirt now. Additionally, Tiger supports a very wide range of the new drives inc. DL (8.4 Gigs) enabled puppies like the Pioneer 110D which I have working perfectly in my 1st generation Quicksilver (the cheaper version of the drive Brian put in his MDD I believe). Swapping out your existing CD writer for one of these is your best bet, as mentioned, for a variety of reasons, inc.: you'll gain nothing by having both installed, the new one will be faster in all regards and that system bus will only have only the one unit yanking its chain.

Additionally, in case you want to get even more involved at some point, I flashed to enable region-free and RAM operation (effectively making it a Pioneer 110 with zero region code, which bought new would be more expensive). It was a snap. Everything you didn't know you wanted to know can be found here for most of the new drives that will work in your QS, or almost any other Mac:

eBay the old unit (tho' you won't get much) and have fun, db
