Odd. This may be to do with the VolumeCheck doing something odd. You
can copy the contents of the MacFuse.pkg from the dmg onto a local
(writable) volume, then put in extra 'echo' statements in the
VolumeCheck script(s) to see what error code that's returning.

If you just want to get the binaries in place, deleting the
VolumeCheck scripts and the pre/postinstall scripts will at least get
the binaries in the right place; after which, you might be able to
re-run the installer to finish up. Though frankly, after the bits are
in the right place a reboot is probably sufficient.
