I would rather have it say that you are using a newer version then that what is available as the current stable. Not that a version lower is considered as an "update". It doesn't work well with me. 2.2.2 is a newer version than 2.2.1. One can't seems to escape the fact :P
Using MacUpdate, which pulls the version string somewhere. https://skitch.com/mindtooth/ftxqa/macupdate-desktop I know the MacUpdate bit is cosmetics.
