Hi Kay,

The official MacFUSE project is dead. There have been several attempts by
various people or companies to provide newer unofficial versions of MacFUSE
which fix various bugs. The most popular build of these (at least on this
mailing list) is Tuxera's MacFUSE 2.2.0/1 which "works" on OS X 10.5 through
10.7. You won't be able to install these unofficial versions through the
original MacFUSE's update mechanism. There are some known bugs:

(1) If you mount a filesystem without the allow_others option you might run
into problems with Finder. Copying or Moving files might not work due to a
permission issue. This could be considered a bug in Lion. In any case we need
to work around it.

(2) Under rare conditions there seems to be a deadlock when running a 64 bit
kernel (default under Lion) which leads to the filesystem being unmounted. This
particularly happens with EncFS, if you move lots of files.

Bryan's version fixes these issues but he has not released the source yet.
Nobody had a chance to look at his patch.

OSXFUSE aims to be the new MacFUSE. It is compatible with MacFUSE filesystems
and can be considered a drop-in replacement. The newest version of OSXFUSE is
2.3.1. Most of its code is identical to Tuxera's MacFSUE 2.2.0/1 release and it
suffers from the same issues listed above. At least issue (1) will be fixed in
the next update. OSXFUSE is in beta phase at the moment.

To complete the picture: There is also Fuse4X which aims to be very close to
the Linux version of FUSE but requires MacFUSE filesystems to be recompiled in
order to work.

Regards,
Benjamin
