Hi Beth, Having the same problem with two browsers would lead me to believe that something is amiss within your Network System Preference settings. You may want to reference a Mac that is working properly and duplicate the settings (less IP address if they are static). Maybe the addition of DNS addresses would help as well.
Needless to say, your common OS X maintenance procedures should be performed as well i.e. reinstall the latest updates, repair disk permissions, manually run your cron tasks and repair your directory structures.
