Tasks scheduled with cron are done with varying frequency. There are
various maintenance tasks that are run daily, weekly, or monthly.

The daily tasks are scheduled for 3:15 every morning. The weekly tasks
are done at 4:30 in the morning on Saturday. The monthly tasks are done
at 5:30 in the morning on the first day of the month. If you have your
machine turned off at these times, they do not get done.

MacJanitor is a free program to make your Mac run the maintenance
scripts whenever you want. There are several other programs which do
the same thing.

It's a good idea to run the maintenance scripts once in a while because
they do useful things like rotating logs, clearing caches and generally
removing detritus from your hard drive.
