There is a facility in Unix called cron that runs scheduled commands. Mac OS X has a built-in list of cron tasks for system maintenance. Unfortunately, they run early in the morning, when most of us are asleep. If you don't leave your machine on all night, it's a good idea to run them by hand once in a while.
