A big thank you to Allen, Dan and Jerry. A PRAM zapping restart seems
to have done the trick.

I enlisted a neighbor to offer a 3rd hand... which led to debate over
the definition of "several times". We decided:
2 = "a couple"
3 to 4 = "a few"
4 to 5 = "several"
6 = "a half dozen"
7 or more = "a whole bunch"

So, 5 chimes later, the iMac is up and running with 10.3.3, and I am
grateful for the help. But I think I'll wait "a whole bunch" of days
before I try the update on the iBook!
