Eric:

You can move your iTunes library to an external HD, then change the  
location in iTunes>Preferences>Advanced. However, when I tried to  
sync my iPod Photo to the iPhoto library on another drive, never  
could. Had to move that library back to user/home/pictures/iphoto for  
proper syncing. How large is your external HD? Is this a G4 iBook? OS  
X version?
