Eric:

Try copying your entire iTunes library to the external HD. Then  
redirect iTunes to the new library via Preferences. See if your iPod  
will sync to the new library (mine does, but it's a firewire  
connection, not USB.) This can free up your iBook of a lot of space  
if you have a large music collection. Obviously this is done by  
deleting your iTunes library on the iBook.

Remember that without your external drive, you no longer have music/ 
videos. If you only use your iPod for playback or only view/listen  
while at home, no problem.
